Natal chart explained: what it is and how to read it

← All articles

A natal chart is a "snapshot of the sky" at the moment you were born: where the Sun, Moon and planets stood relative to the zodiac signs and houses. It's a personal map no one else has — even people born on the same day, but at a different time or city, will have a different chart.

What the chart is made of

Planets show the "what" — the energies and functions of the psyche: the Sun is the core of personality, the Moon is emotions and the need for safety, Mercury is thinking, Venus is love and values, Mars is will and action.

Zodiac signs show "how" a planet expresses itself, and the houses show "where" — in which area of life (relationships, career, home, money).

Aspects — the angles between planets — describe how these energies interact: harmoniously (trines, sextiles) or through tension (squares, oppositions), which often becomes a point of growth.

The big three: Sun, Moon, Ascendant

To understand someone quickly, look at the combination of the Sun (core), Moon (emotions) and Ascendant (how others see you). This trio sets the foundation of character — not the Sun sign alone.

Why exact birth time matters

The Ascendant and houses shift about one degree every 4 minutes, so an accurate chart needs your birth time. If it's unknown, the chart can still be built — the planets' signs remain correct.
